Tom Chaney is played by Jeff Corey in the 1969 film adaption of True Grit, and by Josh Brolin in the the 2010 version.
Chaney is the killer of Mattie Ross's father, who is being hunted down by Reuben J. Cogburn and law enforcement official La Boeuf.

Tom Chaney is a coward who killed Mattie's father after he had lost all of his winings through gambiling. After losing all of his winnings he drank a ton of whiskey and threatened to shoot Mattie's father several times before her father forced him outside to calm down. Tom shot Frank Ross through the head instantly killing him. Afterwards he got scared and stole her father's horse and money along with 2 gold pieces her father carried around from California. After killing frank ross he ran away to find a safe place on his way the woods he met ned pepper and his gang and got cought up in there bissness a few days after ned pepper and tom robed a bank.
